Track and Trace adds transparency to supply chains

Container evidence in real time for nox NachtExpress

Problem

The exact location of load carriers in the logistics network is often unknown. This leads to high costs for both supplier and manufacturing companies. As the European market leader in nighttime express delivery services, nox NachtExpress is looking for smart solutions to add transparency to the supply chain.

Solution

Each load carrier is equipped with a sensor. The sensors send data on the location and condition of the load carriers to the cloud in short intervals via gateways located at relevant points in the supply chain. At nox NachtExpress, 8,500 load carriers are already equipped with sensors and an expansion of the cooperation is planned.

Benefit

Now, logistics service provider as well as manufacturing companies constantly know how many transport boxes from which stock are on the road in the Europe-wide delivery cycle, and where they are located. Furthermore, this new transparency reduces transport costs and makes it easier for nox NachtExpress to plan its logistics network.

"Load carriers are lost, damaged or even misused due to a lack of transparency. This entails considerable planning and procurement costs."

Logistic load carriers such as grid boxes, containers and cases are on the road a lot. However, their exact location in the logistics network is often unknown. This leads to high costs for both supplier and manufacturing companies. “Load carriers are lost, damaged or even misused due to a lack of transparency. This entails considerable planning and procurement costs,” says Henry Kussatz, Business Development Manager at nox NachtExpress. The logistics service provider therefore relies on Track and Trace to make its supply chains more transparent.

Making work easier for logistics staff

Track and Trace equips each load carrier with a sensor. The sensors send data on the location and condition of the load carriers to the cloud in short intervals via gateways located at relevant points in the supply chain, such as warehouses, incoming or outgoing goods. The core of the solution is the Track and Trace software. It collects and harmonizes the data, visualizes it and makes it available to the customer either web-based on devices or via standard interfaces in the customer’s own IT system. “The goal of Track and Trace is to make the daily work of logistics staff easier and the supply chain more efficient,” says Jutta Kühne, Chief Product Owner Track and Trace at Bosch.IO.

Significant time and cost savings

At nox NachtExpress, 10,000 load carriers are already equipped with sensors. Moreover, gateways have been installed at the relevant points both at nox NachtExpress and at selected customer locations. Now both parties constantly know how many transport boxes from which stock are on the road in the Europe-wide delivery cycle, and where they are located. “This makes planning and scheduling much easier,” says Henry Kussatz. “While our employees previously had to keep records of the number of load carriers and search for missing containers, they now have a clear overview at a mouse-click”. The permanent real-time inventory also eliminates unnecessary acquisition costs for new load carriers. Furthermore, this new transparency reduces transport costs and makes it easier for nox NachtExpress to plan its logistics network.

nox NachtExpress is currently planning to extend the solution to further transport routes and areas of application. In the not too distant future, the entire transport chain from the main run to innight delivery will be equipped with the Bosch technology. Track and Trace is not only suited for load carriers. The software can also be used to track vehicles and goods down to package level. Logistics experts always know whether the transported goods arrive at the customer’s site on time.
